Transforming New York’s Schools: Collaborative Technical Assistance for Lasting Improvement.

 

The Challenge
New York State Education Department (NYSED)seeks to accelerate improvement in designated Target Districts and Identified Schools by strengthening education leadership and building sustainable, district- and school-level capacity for continuous improvement. The core challenge of the Implementing Continuous Improvement Technical Assistance (ICITA) project is to provide technical assistance that translates state goals into measurable, school-embedded outcomes—especially given New York’s student diversity, regional variation, and the imperative for equity and inclusion.

Delivering Consistent Technical Assistance across several Models:

  • Assistant Principal Mentoring: Experienced SSP provide quality mentoring to assistant principals in several schools across the state.

  • Coaching for Excellence: Highly skilled cadre of SSPs or Associates build and incorporate shared learning with instructional coaches to identified schools within the network of schools. 

  • Targeted Support Schools: Experienced, and highly effective set of SSPs provided a rigorous approach to support to school leaders in the state’s highest need schools for an ongoing and collaborative approach to support. 

  • Principal Supervisor Support: SSPs who were former principal supervisors have devised a support model to assistant superintendents or other principal supervisors to align the support work at the campuses and the district through several in person and virtual convenings. 

This approach offers NYSED not just compliance, but a significant, data-driven step-change in leadership, teaching, and student outcomes—driven by a committed, culturally responsive partnership model and measurable by the indicators that matter most for New York’s students and communities.
